When we think of the story in the Book of Esther, we seem to recall that Ahasuerus “fired” Queen Vashti in a moment of wrath.
If we take a closer look at the actual script, we learn that in fact this was a decision by committee – namely the seven Persian ministers – Karshena, Shetar, Admata, Tarshish, Meres, Marsena and Memukhan.
This piece depicts this faceless, all-male committee, whose decision it was to remove a woman from her greatness. The characters bear a contemporary look – to remind us that men making decisions over women’s lives is still a widespread practice in our times.
